Telling our Story as we Celebrate 40 Years in Business
As MJP Wealth Advisors celebrates our 40th anniversary, we look back with gratitude:
For our clients, who place their trust in us to secure and protect their ability to fulfill dreams like funding college for children and grandchildren and retiring after a long and fruitful career
For our team of experienced, dedicated professionals, whose dedication to the guiding values of our company has been a key factor in our success
For our founder, Mort Potoff, who started this business in 1981 to provide clients with a personal approach to financial management
To celebrate this milestone, we sat down with Mort to talk about what has made MJP succeed for four decades.
A focus on personal service
Mort’s best advice is this: “Put yourself in your client’s shoes. Would you do it for yourself? If the answer is yes, then you'll be right 99% of the time. If you can’t do it for yourself, how can you do it for your clients?” This philosophy has guided him to “walk the extra mile” when helping his clients as they navigated challenges, because “helping people is what makes it all worthwhile.”
A focus on building a great team
We are proud of our team, without whom this anniversary would not be possible. Mort’s “golden rules” for staff were based on wisdom he received from his own father. “My dad always said to treat your employees the way you would want to be treated, be generous, and trust them.” These golden rules have helped MJP build a dedicated team over the years; some of our employees have been with us since the very beginning. “Our people have been with us a long time, and they’re a part of our story, a part of our family.”
A focus on family
When asked about what it was like to bring his family into the business, Mort said it was natural to entrust his business to Michele and Brian, not only because they are his daughter and son-in-law, but also because of the qualities they both hold. “I never thought there would be a problem with Brian and Michele taking over, and I’m proud of how they’ve taken our business to a whole new level,” he said. “There’s a lot of satisfaction in having them carry on the legacy and seeing the way they work together. At our heart, we are a family business, and what that means is we are family-run and we treat our employees and clients like family.”
A focus on the future
Brian spoke with gratitude for the past and its lessons, and with confidence about the future of MJP: “The company has always been open to productive change—identifying the next steps without sacrificing our core values. That’s the key to our consistent growth over the past 40 years.” Reflecting on MJP’s history, he said, “The business has become better than anything we ever expected, and our clients and employees are now part of our family story. We pulled together and worked hard to support each other in so many ways, we have something great to show for it, and we’re not stopping anytime soon.”Michele shared thoughts of gratitude for the MJP clients and team members: “We are especially grateful to be celebrating this milestone in our firm’s history with our wonderful clients and our remarkable team. A heartfelt thank you to our clients for their continued trust and for allowing us the great privilege of helping you and your family over the years.”We’re glad you’re a part of it—here’s to 40 more years!
